Coming Out Therapyin India With Queer Affirmative Care
Maybe you have been rehearsing a conversation with your parents in your head for months. Maybe you are still figuring out which words fit you, and saying them out loud even once feels like a lot. Or maybe you came out years ago and the hard part turned out to be everything that came after. Wherever you are right now, you should not have to explain or defend who you are to the person who is meant to help you.
That is what coming out therapy in India at Creative Care is about. We are a Hyderabad based mental health practice, and our care is trauma informed, queer affirmative and neurodivergent affirming at its core. Our founder is a Queer Affirmative Therapist certified by the Mariwala Health Initiative, and that lens runs through the way our whole team works.
This page walks you through what we help with, how sessions work, and how to find the right therapist when you feel ready.
Who This Page Is For
This page is for anyone who is queer, questioning, trans, nonbinary or still working it out, and wants a therapist who gets it without a long explanation first. It is also for people who are queer and neurodivergent at the same time, and are honestly tired of being understood for one part of themselves and misread for the other.
You do not need a clear label, a plan or a crisis to reach out. A lot of people come to us simply because something feels heavy and they would like to stop carrying it alone. That is a good enough reason.
What We Help With
Coming Out to Family and Friends
Coming out in India is rarely one single conversation. It can involve parents, siblings, relatives, marriage pressure, religion, money and even the question of where you will live. Therapy gives you room to think through whether you want to come out, to whom, when and how, without anyone rushing you. Your therapist can help you plan what you might say, prepare for different reactions, and look after yourself if things do not go the way you hoped. And if you decide now is not the right time, that is a valid choice too.
Gender Identity and Self Exploration
Questions about gender can feel confusing, exciting, scary and lonely, sometimes all in the same week. Our therapists offer a calm space to explore your gender identity at your own pace, with no pressure to land on an answer quickly. Your identity is respected as it is. It is never treated as a symptom or a phase.
Being Queer and Neurodivergent
Many queer people also have ADHD, are autistic or are otherwise neurodivergent. These parts of you affect each other, so good care looks at both together. Our therapists work with ADHD, executive function struggles, burnout, emotional overwhelm and identity exploration, so you do not have to split yourself into pieces to be understood.
Relationships, Stress and Old Wounds
Living in a world that is not always kind takes a toll. People come to us with anxiety, low mood, shame, family conflict, painful relationship patterns, or experiences of rejection that still sting years later. Because our work is trauma informed, we go at a pace that feels safe and pay attention to how these experiences show up in your body, not just your thoughts. You can read more on our trauma therapy in India page.
How Our Affirmative Approach Works
Queer affirmative counselling means your identity is welcomed as a healthy part of who you are. Your therapist will not try to change it, question it or treat it as the root of your problems. The focus stays on whatever you came in for.
Beyond that, we do not push everyone through one fixed method. Some sessions are mostly talking. Others use somatic therapy, which gently tunes into what your body is holding, because stress and old hurt often live there too. Our team also draws on attachment focused, psychodynamic and emotion focused ways of working, and adjusts them to you.
Our founder and director, Shreya Banerjee, holds an M.Sc in Clinical Psychology from Christ University, Bengaluru, and is a Queer Affirmative Therapist certified by the Mariwala Health Initiative. Parvathi Ganesan on our team is a queer affirmative somatic and trauma therapist who also works with neurodivergence. You can meet all our therapists here, see their core skills and session price, and book directly.
We also believe healing happens in community, not only in a therapy room. Alongside individual psychotherapy, we run group therapy, listening circles and lived experience peer support. Our services are shaped together with people who have lived through mental health struggles themselves, so the care feels real and human rather than top down. I’m thinking of coming out to my family in India. Where can I find a queer affirmative therapist to help me?
Creative Care is one good place to start. We are a Hyderabad based practice where queer affirmative care is built into how every therapist works, not added as an afterthought. Our founder holds a Queer Affirmative Therapist certification from the Mariwala Health Initiative, one of the better known names for affirmative mental health training in India.
In sessions, your therapist can help you sort through the practical and emotional side of coming out to family. That might mean figuring out who to tell first, thinking about how your parents usually handle big news, practising the words, and having a plan for the days after. A lot of people also need space to deal with guilt or fear of letting family down, which is really common in Indian homes. None of this needs to be solved in one go.
Whoever you choose, it is completely fair to ask a therapist directly whether they are queer affirmative and what training they have. A good therapist will be glad you asked. You can browse our therapist profiles or ask our team to help you choose.
Where can I find a trans affirmative therapist or gender identity counselling in India, preferably online?
Creative Care offers affirmative therapy for queer, trans and neurodivergent adults in India. A trans affirmative therapist respects your gender identity, uses your name and pronouns, and does not treat being trans as something to be fixed or argued with. That is the starting point for everyone on our team.
Gender identity counselling with us can include exploring questions about your gender, dealing with dysphoria or stress, handling family and workplace reactions, and building self acceptance at a pace that works for you. If you need help with something specific, like support around medical or legal steps, please tell our team upfront so we can guide you to the right person.
On the online part: we are based in Begumpet, Hyderabad, and the quickest way to check online availability with a particular therapist is to message us on WhatsApp at 9963515777 or email support@creativecare.co.in. We will point you to someone who fits.
Is there a therapist in India who is both queer affirmative and neurodivergent affirming, and offers counselling online?
Yes, this is exactly the kind of care Creative Care was set up for. Our practice is queer affirmative and neurodivergent affirming at its core, so you will not have to pick which part of yourself gets understood.
Several of our therapists list neurodivergence among their core skills. Parvathi Ganesan is a queer affirmative somatic and trauma therapist who works with neurodivergence. Aastha Khera supports adults with ADHD and executive function challenges as well as identity exploration. Our founder, Shreya Banerjee, also works with neurodivergence alongside trauma and somatic therapy.
In practice this means sessions can bend around how your brain works. That could mean clearer structure, written summaries, fewer assumptions about eye contact or small talk, and real patience with things like shutdowns or overwhelm. For online sessions, drop us a message and we will check which of these therapists can see you online. You can also look at our peer support for queerness and neurodivergence.
